What is the difference between biodegradable, compostable and recyclable?

When a product is biodegradable, it can decompose fully in nature without any specific treatment. The material of a biodegradable product is of 100% natural/renewable origins without any harmful chemicals or additives. These materials will turn into water, CO2 and biomass when decomposed, leaving no harmful chemicals behind. Products like plastic and metal will also biodegrade at some point, but it could take up to 1000 years and it will harm the environment with micro particles and chemicals.

Compostable means that the materials can be biodegraded under certain conditions – either in an industrial composting facility or in home compost, depending on their characteristics. Compostable products do not leave any toxic residues behind.

Recycling is the process of recovering used waste, or scrap plastic and re-making the material into new products.

What is the difference between the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel?

Both eco-labels have strict requirements for health, quality, and environment and look at all relevant phases of the product’s life cycle. The essential difference between the two is that theNordic Ecolabelcomes from the Nordic Council of Ministers and is used primarily in the Nordic countries, whereas theEU Ecolabelwas established by the European Commission and is used in the EU.

What does the EU Ecolabel guarantee?

The EU Ecolabel guarantees the same as the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. It is your guarantee that a product is produced with care and consideration for the environment. The label has strict requirements for a product’s entire life cycle concerning health, quality, and environment, and looks at; raw materials, product composition and waste, quality, distribution, packaging, and disposal.

What does the Nordic Swan Ecolabel stand for?

When a product is labeled with theNordic Swan Ecolabelit is your guarantee that the product is produced with care and consideration for the environment. The label has strict requirements for a product’s entire life cycle concerning health, quality, and environment, and looks at; raw materials, product composition and waste, quality, distribution, packaging, and disposal. See more here.

What does the FSC logo stand for?

FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council)is your guarantee that a product is made from raw materials that derive from well-managed forests and responsible sources.Learn more about the FSC here.

How is a dermatological test performed?

Dermatological tests are performed differently depending on which product is tested.

For diapers

All raw materials are tested for skin irritations together with independent and officially approved institutes in Germany. The tests are conducted on 20 persons of whom six have sensitive skin.

For skin care products

The test is done on at least 50 people with different skin types. A sample of the product is placed on a small area of the skin for 48 hours and afterwards the skin is observed. The test is done under observation from a dermatologist.

These tests demonstrate that our products are safe for your baby and live up to our high-quality standards.

What is the difference between eco-labelled and biodegradable?

Eco-labels focus on environmental considerations and human health (skin-friendliness, dangerous substances, etc.) and do not necessarily say anything about the degradability of a product. That a product is biodegradable is not in itself a proof that a product is sustainable. Products are only proven biodegradable if they are marked with a biodegradable symbol from an official third party institution that has tested the product according to the official biodegradability standards.

Can I dispose of the diapers without worry?

Yes, if you dispose of the diapers correctly with your household waste. In most countries, the diaper waste ends up at waste disposal sites where it is burned and turned into new energy like heat or electricity.

However, some countries have specific waste or recycling systems for used diapers. Check with your local authorities to learn if this is the case where you live.

What happens to the diaper after I dispose of it?

The last step of the baby diaper life cycle is to dispose of the used diaper responsibly. For some countries, this means sorting it in a separate diaper waste recycling system. For most countries however, the diaper is disposed of together with the normal household waste. This is also called residual waste and it is the part of your household waste that is not recycled.

Residual waste ends up at the municipal waste disposal site, where most of it is burned and turned into new energy like heat or electricity. The share of residual waste that is turned into new energy varies from country to country.

Why is your sunscreen not ECOCERT Cosmos certified?

The ECOCERT Cosmos only approves inorganic filters in sunscreen, and we chose to only use organic filters.

What is the difference between organic and inorganic filters?

Sunscreens get their efficiency from the solar filters present in the formula.

There are two types of filters:

Organic filters: ingredients that penetrate the skin and absorb the energy from the sunbeams, so they do not penetrate to the deeper skin layers and cause damage. Organic filters are absorbed like a normal body lotion. These filters are also called chemical filters.

Inorganic filters: Usually titanium dioxide, but there are also other kinds of inorganic filters. Inorganic filters reflect the rays, like a mirror, preventing them from penetrating the skin. These filters are sometimes also called physical filters, since they are not absorbed by the skin, but form a layer on top of the skin, often making the skin white.
