Summer brings sunshine, ice cream, and plenty of adorable baby outfits (who knew a sunhat could be so cute?) – but it can also bring heat, sweat, and the dreaded diaper rash. Warm weather makes it harder to keep your baby’s skin dry and comfortable, which can lead to irritation and discomfort. And let’s be honest – nothing ruins a peaceful summer’s day faster than an uncomfortable, fussy baby (except maybe stepping on a rogue toy barefoot, ouch).
But don’t worry! We’ve got your back (and your baby’s bottom) covered with some easy tips, so you can help keep diaper rash at bay and ensure your little one stays happy all summer long.
Tips to avoid diaper rash:
1. Choose breathable diapers 💨
During the summer heat, it’s even more important to choose a super-breathable diaper that helps reduce trapped heat and moisture. The diaper should also be fast-absorbing and ideally have a top-dry layer to keep the skin as dry as possible.
2. Change diapers frequently ⏱️
Warm weather means extra sweating and that’s a bad combo with a moist diaper. Bambo Nature diapers have a super handy wetness indicator, that turns blue if the diaper is wet and ready to be changed, but if you’re ever in doubt, it’s better to be safe than sorry and change the diaper anyway.
3. Free the baby bum 👶
One of the best ways to keep diaper rash at bay (and help cool your baby’s skin) is to give your baby some diaper-free time between changes. It’s great to let the skin breathe and air dry. If your child is around the potty-training age, you can probably let them roam free for a little while under supervision, but if your baby is still small, put down a towel or absorbent mat and let them enjoy some fresh air – just watch out for accidents!
4. Use a protective barrier cream 🧴
A good diaper cream acts as a barrier between your baby’s skin and the moisture and friction in the diaper. Applying a thin layer at every diaper change can help keep your baby’s skin barrier intact and keep rashes away.
5. Cool babies wear cotton 🕶️
Lightweight, breathable clothes made from natural fibers, like cotton, help keep your baby cool and comfortable and minimize sweat. If your baby is feeling very hot and difficult to cool down, it’s totally okay to only put them in a onesie or in their diaper.
6. Keep your baby hydrated 💧
Make sure your baby is getting enough fluid – whether it’s breast milk, formula, or water (if they’re old enough) – to help their little bodies regulate in the summer heat.
When should you see a doctor?
Most benign diaper rashes clear up at home with some fresh air and barrier cream, but if you notice blisters, sores, or just a rash that won’t quit despite your best efforts, it might be time to check in with your doctor and get an assessment, just in case.
Now, go enjoy the sun 😎
Summer should be all about fun in the sun, not itchy, irritated baby bums. With a little extra care and some breathable diaper choices, you can keep your little one cool, comfortable, and ready for all the summer fun ahead!
