6 Tips to Care for Your Baby’s Skin in Winter

Winter weather can be magical; think snowflakes, hot cocoa, cozy blankets. But it’s not always so kind to baby skin. Dry air, chilly winds, and temperature swings can lead to irritation, dryness, and rosy (sometimes bordering on irritated) cheeks.

But don’t worry, helping your baby’s skin stay soft and comfortable through winter is absolutely doable, with a little extra care (and a good barrier cream on standby).
Here’s how to keep your baby’s skin happy all winter long.

Why baby skin needs extra love in winter

  • Baby skin is thinner and more delicate than adult skin, which means it loses moisture faster.
  • The harsh temperature changes between indoor heating and cold outdoor air can strip the skin’s natural moisture barrier.
  • Common winter skin concerns: dryness, redness, flakiness, chapped cheeks, and diaper rash flare-ups.

6 Winter skin care tips for babies

1. Moisturize often – and gently

Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer after every bath and before heading outdoors. Bambo Nature Soothing Cream, for example, forms a soft barrier that helps prevent moisture loss on cheeks, hands, and bottoms.

2. Choose bath time wisely

A nice, hot bath can seem like the ultimate luxury on cold days, but daily baths aren’t always necessary in winter. Keep bath water lukewarm (not hot), limit bath time to 5–10 minutes, and always moisturize afterward when the skin is still damp.

3. Bundle up with layers

Overdressing can cause sweat buildup that may irritate the skin. Dress your baby in breathable layers so you can add or remove depending on their body temperature, and remember: one more layer than you’re wearing is usually a good rule of thumb.

4. Watch out for the wind

Cold wind can be tough on exposed skin. Use stroller covers or baby-safe balms as wind shields when venturing out. Our Soothing Cream also works as a gentle barrier on cheeks and hands.

5. Stay on top of diaper changes

Moisture from wet diapers can contribute to diaper rash, which may worsen in winter. Make sure to change diapers often and use baby wipes that are perfume-free and gentle on sensitive skin.

6. Hydration from the inside out

If your baby is still breastfeeding or formula-fed, they’re already getting what they need in terms of hydration. But for older babies who’ve started solids, offer water regularly and choose water-rich fruits and veggies like cucumber or pear to help maintain moisture levels from the inside.

When to see a doctor

Some dryness or redness is totally normal, but if your baby develops:

  • Cracked or bleeding skin
  • Rashes that don’t improve
  • Weeping sores or scabs

…it’s a good idea to check in with your pediatrician. Conditions like eczema can sometimes show up or worsen in winter and may need extra care.

Winter skin, made easy

With a few simple steps and some extra love, you can help keep your baby’s skin soft, happy, and well-protected all winter long. So go ahead – bundle up, build a snowman, and enjoy the season… knowing your little one is covered (literally and figuratively).
